Electrician quote template for UK electrical work

Break an electrical quote into circuits, the gap between first fix and second fix, the accessories and their finish, the consumer unit if you are changing it, and the test. A single line that says kitchen electrics does not tell the customer which of those they are buying.

Practical notes for a UK electrician writing a quote. This page does not set out what the wiring rules require on a particular job. Not legal or tax advice.

An electrical quote is a list of circuits and deliverables, with a price on each. A rewire, a consumer unit change, and an extra kitchen circuit are different shapes of job. The quote should show which one this is. The UK quote template is the page around these lines.

Price by circuit

Name each circuit or area: kitchen sockets, cooker, hob, lighting, smoke alarms, outside socket. A heading of "rewire" can stay, as long as the lines under it say which floors and which circuits. The quantity is usually the circuit, the point, or the metre of containment. The unit should say which.

First fix, second fix, and the gap between them

When plastering or other building work sits between your visits, split the quote into first fix and second fix. First fix is cable, back boxes, and containment. Second fix is the accessories, and the connections, after the walls are ready.

Say whether the cable is chased or on the surface. Say who makes good the chases. If making good is the builder's or the decorator's job, put it in the exclusions. On a larger build, point that exclusion at the builder's quote, which prices making good in the building sections.

Board, accessories, and the finish

If the consumer unit is part of the job, give it a section of its own. Name the board you will fit, and say that labelling is included. Leave the board out of the circuit prices.

Name the accessory finish. White plastic and a metal finish are different prices, and the quote should say which one you allowed. List customer-supplied lights, the oven, and the hob as supplied by the customer, and still price your labour to connect them.

The boiler itself, when the job includes a new one, belongs on a plumber's quote. Connecting an appliance the customer already has can stay here, on its own line.

Testing as a line the customer can see

Put inspection and testing on its own line, and name the certificate you will hand over in the description. The customer can see that the test is part of the price, and which document they will receive with it.

A worked example: kitchen circuits and a consumer unit

Example figures for layout only. The job in this layout is a kitchen: a new socket circuit, three appliance supplies, accessories in white plastic, a consumer unit replacement, and a test. Making good is by others. Check that each example line total is the example unit price times the quantity. Twelve accessories at £18 is £216. Three appliance supplies at £95 is £285.

Example net total, layout only: £2,071. This table does not add VAT. In Quotebefore, VAT is calculated on the net total.

Exclusions on this example: making good the chases, decoration, supply of the oven and the hob (the connection labour is in the table), and any circuit outside the kitchen.

Example programme, layout only: first fix on one day, second fix after the plaster is dry, test on the second-fix visit. If the plasterer moves, the second-fix line moves with that date, and the first-fix price stays.

Checklist before you send an electrician's quote

Write the quote in Quotebefore

In Quotebefore, the UK PDF says Quote. The currency follows the shop country, so a UK shop is in GBP. VAT is calculated on the net total. Quotes are valid for 30 days by default, and that date can be edited. The PDF prints the VAT number, the company number and the address when those fields are filled in. Speech recognition runs on the device. No account is needed. The first 3 quotes are free, with no watermark. The app reminds you on working days 3, 7 and 12 after the quote is sent, then stops.

The lines on this page fit the UK quote template. For choosing an app to produce the quote, use the best quoting app for tradespeople guide.
